Plastic Manufacturing and Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic (FRP) Tanks
There are two types of plastics, thermoplastics and thermosets.

Thermoplastics can be formed into almost any shape when heated and then hold that shape until heated again. They then can be reformed many times.

Thermosets are plastics that once are melted can not be melted again. This can be very costly if an error is made. These types of plastic are common in every industry because they are temperature resistant, durable, and can withstand a lot of pressure.

Fiberglass tanks are thermoplastic which effects its manufacturing process. They are made using a thermoset plastic so it can be heated and cooled when needing to add or take away any product from the overall tank.

When exposed to chemicals, these types of plastics are good at resisting the effects of chemical erosion. Acrylic nylon, polyester, polycarbonate, polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene are all very well known plastics that can be used for the manufacturing of plastics. They are used to promote different products and are used for different applications. Fiberglass tanks use a number of these and in addition use pigments, monomers, catalysts, hardeners and accelerators to change the overall product of the tank.

To manufacture plastics, computer programs have been developed to decrease human error and increase production rate. These computer programs are CAD systems (Computer Aided Design), we use these to draw and create the tank before it is fabricated.

All of plastic manufacturing can be sorted into two categories; molding and forming. Molding processes include heating the plastic and injecting it or molding the shape to the desired product. This is used for products like tubing, hollow parts or fiberglass tanks. Other types of plastic manufacturing processes include thermoforming, extruding and injection molding.

Understanding these different types of plastic manufacturing can help the buyer understand the product and how it is made. Fiberglass tanks are made using a special process that involves many steps. This impacts the cost and time of production as well.
